Drivers’ licences Foreign national drivers licences are valid for tourist visits, or repeated short visits to Germany, providing that the licence is legible in either English or German. If the transferee does not have such a licence, it is advisable that he/she obtains an international driver's licence before coming to Germany either for a preview trip, or for his/her eventual relocation. |

Once non-European transferees have been resident in Germany for six months, their driver’s licences are no longer valid. Driving in Germany (as in most other countries) without being in possession of a valid driver’s licence is a Federal offence. Should the transferee be involved in an accident without having a valid driver’s licence, he/she will almost certainly have no insurance cover either, which may prove to be troublesome. Requirements to exchange licences vary according to where the transferee’s licence was originally issued. The Relocation Consultant, in co-operation with a local driving school, will guide your transferee through the process of exchanging the transferee’s national driver’s licence for a German one.
